McGuffey Birthplace
This simple one-room frontier log home, built about 1780, in Washington County, Pennsylvania, was the
birthplace of author and educator William Holmes McGuffey (1800-1873). This was the first home of his
parents, Anna and Alexander McGuffey, after they were first married. William lived in this log home
until he was two years old, when his parents packed up their homestead and headed further west to the
Ohio wilderness.
William McGuffey created the McGuffeys, series of Eclectic Readers based on his unique upbringing
and experiences on the Ohio frontier. His easy-to-understand Eclectic Readers were widely used school
textbooks in the mid-1800s.
