Stony Creek
The In many early villages and towns, mill ponds were created by damming streams, creeks, and rivers to build
up a reserve of water. Millers controlled a release that directed some of the water through channels toward
their mills. The water then turned a water wheel that powered the mill machinery as it does today for the
Loranger Gristmill and Plymouth Carding Mill in Greenfield Village.

The Greenfield Village Stony Creek was formed in 2003 as part of the restoration of the
village. The mill pond is part of the villages storm water management system, which serves to cleans
water and improves the villages wetlands on its way to the Rouge River Watershed.
